Carlos Raposo

Carlos Raposo spread his wings after college and went on apprenticeships in Bordeaux and Burgundy, among other places. He then spent 7 years as winemaker at Niepoort, where we got to know him.

In 2018, he returned to his home region of Dão with ambitious plans to make wines of the highest level.

He came to us with the first bottled results. The decision to work together was quickly made. Carlos Raposo's wines are a tremendous asset to Portugal and immediately rank among the top.
Preparations for his own project began by Carlos during his time at Niepoort. At that time, he regularly went into the Dão region in search of old vineyards and tried to convince the owners to rent out their plots.
He did the same in the northern region of Vinho Verde. In terms of soil (granite) and climate (among the coolest in Portugal), both regions are very similar. Logically, Carlos wanted to find grapes there as well.
The result can now be tasted on 3 levels:
With Ideal, Carlos makes rather accessible wines but already in a pared-down style and with storage potential for those who want it.
Definido is the Dão in its most intense form. The grapes come from vineyards between 60 and 100 years old for a reason. These give few grapes but with enormous substance.
And then there is the Vinhos Imperfeitos series, where Carlos tries to achieve the impossible and already realizes one of the more successful attempts in history. With the Imperfeitos wines, Carlos seeks absolute precision.
The wines have been stripped down to the essentials and delivered in refined form. 3 Pontos gives a whole new dimension to Vinho Verde, the cuvée D & V astounds with an unreleased blend of Dão and Vinho Verde and the absolute best, of course, had to come from the home region: Imperfeitos Vinho I is Dão Premier Grand Cru.
