The Magma and Muros de Magma cuvée come from the unique terroir of the Azores archipelago, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 1,450 km west of Lisbon.
The idea was born in 2009 and with the help of another Alentejo winemaker, Anselmo Mendes got interested in the cooperative winery of Biscoitos, a small appellation on the island of Terceira.
The incredible history of the wine of Biscoitos had all the necessary elements to keep it going, but the truth is that the terroir is very much under threat. The heroic viticulture that consists of working with curraletas, stone walls that protect the vines from the sea, is far from being profitable for the producers. Without conditions to market their wine, the Verdelho that transmits the nuance of these basaltic rocks (biscoitos), the local wine cooperative could not buy the grapes harvested from its 60 associates. This production, unique in the world, was gradually being abandoned...
The aim was to set up an advisory partnership with the cooperative in order to refocus production and create added value by changing the place of these wines on the market. In 2011 and 2012, the harvest of the grapes was to produce the famous Muros de Magma, the first wine that Anselmo Mendes and his partner bottled in the Biscoitos.
Magma was a success, but the experiment came up against past financial difficulties that undermined the cooperative and did not allow it to support this new investment. After that, the Biscoitos region again lost vineyards and gained holiday homes and all kinds of strange infrastructures in the middle of a green and black landscape, rich in both history and symbolism.
In 2015, thanks to the will of several people involved, Anselmo Mendes and his partner make a different proposal: to run the cooperative and buy all the grapes at the promising price of 1.5 euros/kg, trying to encourage the production and replanting of the vineyard in the abandoned curraletas. These wines would be marketed under the Protected Designation of Origin of Biscoitos, as part of Anselmo Mendes' portfolio. Of course, the cooperative would also receive part of the proceeds and its share of bottles for sale.
With this agreement, the first two Magma and Muros of Magma 2015 are launched. Both have unique characteristics that can only be traced to this volcanic haven: its acidity and salinity, its very discreet aromas and its surprising palate. It's as if we couldn't tell what each glass would reveal.
Production is still rare, in 2015 were produced 2400 bottles of Magma and 1600 bottles of Muros de Magma.
