| Vinification | The grapes for this wine come from 5 small, old vineyards in the hills north of the Serra de Montejunto, some 50km above Lisboa and not far from the Atlantic coast. The soil is mainly calcareous. The altitude of the vineyards, the orientation to the north and the proximity to the ocean maximise the cooling of the vines so that the acidity in the grapes is preserved and the basis for a finesse wine is guaranteed. Cultivation is biodynamic and no cultured yeasts are added to start fermentation either. |

The Vital grape was long known as a variety for volume, until Casal Figueira made this out of it. The grapes come from five small old vineyards in the hills above the Serra de Montejunto, fifty kilometres north of Lisbon and not far from the ocean. Eight months in French oak barrels. Complexity eleven against a weight of eleven: this is one of the purest and most characterful white wines of Portugal, and one of the few you can put beside a main course with meat.

In 1999, Marta Soares left behind the bustling life in Lisboa in search of a quiet, rural studio to work on her art projects. She ended up at Antonio Carvalho's estate and no doubt at the time could never have imagined that 10 years later she would be adding a career as a winemaker.
