This is Vinho Verde as it used to be. Niepoort bottles the wine before fermentation has finished, so that it carries on in the bottle and a fine sparkle develops — far more modest than in a real sparkling wine, just enough to prickle the tongue. After that half a year in bottle to let that sparkle settle. Five native varieties, eleven and a half degrees, and an acidity that wipes the mouth clean. Wine does not get lighter than this.

Dirk Niepoort's impact on the Portuguese wine landscape can hardly be overestimated. When he took over the helm from his father Rolf in 1990, as the 5th generation of the originally Dutch Van der Niepoort family, it was immediately clear that something was about to happen.
