Granito Cru Dao 2023, Luis Seabra
Region: Dão
Producer: Luis Seabra
Luis Seabra was determined to produce wine in Vinho Verde and Dão in addition to his home base in the Douro Valley. After all, a wine lover like Luis—with a strong preference for the finesse found in regions such as Burgundy—is naturally drawn to the cooler climates and granite soils of both these areas. When a magnificent old vineyard came into view in 2017—located in Dão’s finest sub-region near Vila Nova de Tazem, at the foot of the Serra da Estrela—the decision was quickly made.
And so, the all-too-limited availability of Luis Seabra Vinhos is being expanded somewhat.

Luís Seabra is making his name in the Douro, but in the Dão he was looking for what he admires in Burgundy: finesse over power, and a soil that makes itself heard. Granito Cru is named after that soil — granite — and the wine is drawn that way too: Encruzado, Bical and Sercial, twelve months in oak with as little intervention as possible. It is full and broad in the mouth, with a toasted undertone and a long, dry, almost salty finish. This is where it tips: this wine can carry a thickened sauce, but it drowns out a delicate preparation.

When Luis Seabra told us in 2012 about his plans to make wine under his own name, we signed up straight away. We had known him for 10 years as a winemaker at Niepoort and knew we could not miss this.
