Sempar Portalegre Branco 2025, Niepoort
Region: Portugal
Producer: Niepoort
After various projects with different partners in the Alentejo, Dirk Niepoort decided to take matters into his own hands and explore Portalegre—in the Alto Alentejo—independently. "Sempar" means "unrivaled," "unique," or "incomparable"—a name that perfectly captures the style of Niepoort’s winemaking philosophy: uncomplicated wines that allow their vineyards of origin to shine. Sempar Branco 2022 is a vibrant, expressive white wine featuring alluring aromas of apricot and ripe stone fruit, balanced by a refreshing citrus lift. On the palate, this richness is complemented by lively acidity that enhances the wine's freshness and structure. The finish is herbal and persistent, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and depth. Waar serveer je ’m bij?
Portalegre is the most northerly and highest part of the Alentejo, and therefore the coolest — exactly why Niepoort is there. Fermentation happens in steel at sixteen degrees, then eight months in amphorae and on the fine lees. That combination is the whole point: the altitude gives the acidity, the amphora gives the texture, and neither leaves behind a flavour that does not come from the grape. Bical, Fernão Pires and Alvarinho, and at weight six the lightest Alentejo wine we have.

Dirk Niepoort's impact on the Portuguese wine landscape can hardly be overestimated. When he took over the helm from his father Rolf in 1990, as the 5th generation of the originally Dutch Van der Niepoort family, it was immediately clear that something was about to happen.
