D'Oliveira Boal 2006

Boal
also written as Bual creates a semi-sweet wine. Most vineyards can be found in Calheta and Camara de lobos with +/- 18 hectares planted. It is one of the easiest grapes because its sweetness makes the wine more accessible.

Boal — also written Bual — is the medium-sweet one of the four classic Madeira grapes, and this one has been raised the canteiro way: years in old casks under the roof, in an oxidative environment in which the casks are never topped up. That absence of topping up is what makes Madeira Madeira: the wine is deliberately exposed to oxygen and becomes as good as immortal because of it. Twenty years after the harvest this is caramel, walnut, dried fig and a line of acidity that is still entirely in place.

In the hands of the same family since 1850, now in its fifth generation. D'Oliveira keeps 1.5 million litres of old Madeira in cask, with vintages reaching deep into the 19th century: classic Madeira, made the way it used to be.
