Humus
In recent years the coastal region north of Lisbon has become a fascinating one to follow for wine. New wine projects keep appearing, and they almost always take a natural approach.
Pioneer in that field was Rodrigo Filipe of Humus, and he remains one of our personal favorites even today.

In the early 2000s Rodrigo took charge of some 9 ha of vineyards just east of the coastal town of Peniche.
The climate is very attractive, as the ocean wind provides welcome cooling during the growing season. The soil also dates from the Jurassic period, giving an ideal mix of clay, limestone and sandstone, the perfect basis for wines with finesse.
Rodrigo started converting to organic farming straight away. When that change began to pay off after a few years, he gradually banned all artificial aids from his cellar too, becoming a pioneer of natural winemaking in Portugal.
What stands out about Rodrigo's wines is the vintage on the bottles. It is rarely very recent. In spring 2025 he is not selling the 2024 rosé but the 2022! A first reason for this late release lies in the reality of natural winemaking: if you want to bottle wine without added sulphites and be sure it stays stable, a slow natural stabilisation is needed first. That means ageing the wines for at least 2 years, ideally in old wooden casks where they can breathe gently.
Another reason to release wines later is taste: a wine with substance needs time to develop, and a year or two in bottle is usually not enough. That is why we are now offering, among others, a Humus Deriva from the 2014 vintage!
With Humus you are assured of wines with infectious natural freshness, notably low alcohol, a natural composition, character and ageing potential. The latter also disproves the myth that sulphite is needed in wine to ensure it keeps well.
