Rui Reguinga pioneered the now-popular subregion of Portalegre, the northernmost and, due to its high altitude, significantly cooler part of the Alentejo. Rui discovered there in the early 2000s some very old vineyards planted decades ago by settlers from northern Portugal. In the process, they planted varieties they brought back from the Bairrada, among others, in addition to local varieties.Rui immediately saw the potential and especially felt that the combination of the place and the grapes could give him a wine that was in the spirit of the northern Rhone he loved so much. Rui had always had a weakness for the better Roussanne and here in Portalegre he could make a Portuguese version of it.
