For years Quinta do Mouro was synonymous with red wine for us, until son Miguel Junior went about it differently — he works a large part of the year as a winemaker on the German Mosel, and you can hear that in how he handles acidity. Arinto, Verdelho, Alvarinho and Gouveio, entirely in steel, no oak. Straight-lined, mineral and at weight six the lightest of the estate: this is the Alentejo without its usual roundness.
Pan-fried slip soles with almond butter
Pasta with tuna, capers and olives
Serveren op 9–11 °C
Drink: 2024–2027
“The 2022 Vinha do Mouro Branco is an entry-level white—it's a simple and fresh wine from varieties that go a little against the fashion in the zone: Arinto, Verdelho, Alvarinho, Rabigato, Gouveio and Síria (Roupeiro or Códega) that were harvested early. It has 12% alcohol and mellow acidity. It's fruit driven, fresh, good to go with food, without oak and without malolactic; the whites here don't normally go through malolactic fermentation. It finishes dry, with a chalky sensation. 8,200 bottles produced. 2022 is a rounder and slightly riper vintage.”
Miguel Louro bought the historic Quinta do Mouro near Estremoz in 1979. At the time there was no winegrowing there (any more).
