Sempar Portalegre Tinto 2020, Niepoort
Region: Portugal
Producer: Niepoort
Dirk Niepoort holds the area around Portalegre in the Alentejo in high regard. The elegance and balance derived from the granite and slate soils, combined with the altitude of the Serra de S. Mamede mountains, lend the wines a multifaceted acidity that allows for great versatility.
Sempar: a unique balance between the warmth of the Alentejo and the freshness of the Serra mountains.

Sempar means unequalled, and Niepoort does not mean it as a boast but as a programme: wines that above all show their vineyard. A field blend from Portalegre, largely destemmed, fermented and aged for thirty-six months in concrete amphorae, without much extraction. Three years of concrete without oak flavour rounds the tannin completely while the fruit stays sharp.

Dirk Niepoort's impact on the Portuguese wine landscape can hardly be overestimated. When he took over the helm from his father Rolf in 1990, as the 5th generation of the originally Dutch Van der Niepoort family, it was immediately clear that something was about to happen.
