The same plots and the same nineteen months in foudres of a thousand litres as the 2021, but nine years after the harvest. That is the age at which Bical becomes interesting: the fruit has drawn towards honey, dried peach and nut, the texture is waxy, and the acidity that lets this grape live so long is still there underneath. A wine like this does not ask for a fresh plate but a warm one — and it is one of the few white wines on our shelf that can follow a stew.

Dirk Niepoort's impact on the Portuguese wine landscape can hardly be overestimated. When he took over the helm from his father Rolf in 1990, as the 5th generation of the originally Dutch Van der Niepoort family, it was immediately clear that something was about to happen.
