Why we chose this wine
This vineyard is located between the Serra do Buçaco and the Atlantic Ocean, the Rio Vouga and Rio Mondego rivers. As a result, that maritime influence creates freshness, a salty touch and very pronounced acidity.
The 2021 Miguel Silva Baga mixes notes of dry rose petals with some earthy undertones, giving it a combination of elegance and rusticity that is very appealing. It has a medium-bodied palate with dry tannins. The grapes come from two small plots of unknown age (but definitely centenary) and is mainly Baga but with some 2% other varieties-Tinta Pinheira, Moreto, Maria Gomes and Bical.

Miguel Silva grew up among the vines of Bairrada and looked early on to the old guard, Gonçalves Faria above all. He now works as winemaker at Niepoort's Bairrada estate and makes this small amount alongside, for himself. Fermentation in open lagares, seventeen months in French barrels from Burgundy — and you can hear that: twelve and a half degrees with a complexity well above its weight.

“The pale and floral 2021 Miguel Silva Baga mixes notes of dry rose petals with some earthy and tar undertones, giving it a combination of elegance and rusticity that is very attractive. It has some iron-like notes, hints of blood and rusty nails and a medium-bodied palate with very fine, dry tannins, moderate ripeness and 12.5% alcohol. It comes from two small plots of unknown age (but surely centenary) and is mostly Baga but with some 2% other varieties—Tinta Pinheira, Moreto, Maria Gomes and Bical. The grapes were picked on September 10 and fermented with 40% full clusters and the rest of the stems added into the vat. The wine matured in used Burgundy barrels for 17 months. 2,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023.”
