São João Bruto
Region: Espumante
Producer: Caves São João
The Bairrada region, where the São João caves are located, enjoys a cool climate ideal for producing excellent Espumantes. Bairrada and Dão enjoy a temperate climate that allows them to produce wines with excellent ageing potential, but these wines are also delicious in their youth. Thanks to the generosity of Dirk Niepoort, who guided us during our first years in Portugal, we were able to taste very old bottles from the São João Cellars. An impressive bottle of Porta dos Cavaleiros 1963 left us with an unforgettable memory. In 2015, when we had the opportunity to enrich our collection with these wines, we did not hesitate a minute.
The nose is fruity and floral with notes of citrus fruit, pineapple and rose. The palate is fresh, balanced and intense with fine sparkles and a long, dry finish.

Waar serveer je ’m bij?
Caves São João has been making sparkling wine in Bairrada since 1920, and that is not a detail: a hundred years of routine in the same cellar is what you find again in this bottle. Bical, Maria Gomes and Arinto by the traditional method, twelve months sur lattes — in bottle, on the yeast. At the table bubbles do mechanically what acidity does chemically: they lift fat and breadcrumb off the tongue, so that every bite feels like the first again. This is the bottle you buy by the six, not one at a time.
Gougères with mature cheese
Fried chicken nuggets with honey mustard
Serveren op 6–8 °C
In 1920, 3 brothers of the Costa family founded the wine trade Caves São João. The intention was to distribute wines from the Douro but they soon began their own production of sparkling wines.
