Xisto Cru tinto 2023, Luis Seabra

Region: Douro

Producer: Luis Seabra

Why we chose this wine
Dit is zelfs 10 jaar na de release van de eerste Xisto Cru nog steeds pure avant-garde in Douro. Niemand anders in de streek bereikt een dergelijke combinatie van structuur en elegantie.
Seabra's top red, from two old vineyards in the Cima Corgo, fermented with whole bunches in open oak vats and aged for 22 months in used barrels. A finer-boned, elegant vintage with only 12.5% alcohol and very fine tannins. 6,900 bottles.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate: 95/100 (Luis Gutiérrez, April 2026)

Ripening De wijn rijpt normaal 22 maanden op houten vaten maar voor de 2021 koos Luis voor 18 maanden.

“The top-of-the-range red 2023 Xisto Cru Tinto comes from two old vineyards and does not carry the Douro appellation this year. It fermented separately in open top-oak vats with indigenous yeasts and 100% full clusters and matured in used 228-liter barrels for 22 months, including malolactic. It's still a textbook, old-vine red from the Douro field blend, with notes of wet slate, berries and herbs and a spicy twist; it just has less volume, a finer-boned palate and a more elegant mouthfeel. The wine has contained ripeness and low alcohol, 12.5% on the label, with a pH of 3.61 and 6.4 grams of acidity. It's open, clean and expressive and has very fine tannins, coming through as balanced and harmonious but not lacking power. 6,900 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2025.”

When Luis Seabra told us in 2012 about his plans to make wine under his own name, we signed up straight away. We had known him for 10 years as a winemaker at Niepoort and knew we could not miss this.
