Barbeito Single Harvest 2009
Region: Madeira
Producer: Vinhos Barbeito
Why we chose this wine
2009: the year Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States. A Madeira from this vintage carries that year within it: a wine that has matured patiently in cask for years.
This Single Harvest is the result of a blend of grape must from individual vineyards on the south and north coasts of Madeira. Ricardo Diogo harvested the grapes a week before full ripeness and used a horizontal screw press; these two methods resulted in higher acidity in the must. The aging process began in March 2010 using the traditional Canteiro method, with old French oak casks.

| Vinification | A Single Harvest from one specific vintage: the grapes were picked one week before full maturity and processed with a horizontal screw press for extra acidity, blending must from vineyards on both Madeira's south and north coasts. Fermentation was arrested by fortification (mutage) at the medium-dry level (around 69 g/l residual sugar). |
| Ripening | Aged using the traditional canteiro method in old French oak casks since March 2010, bottled in November 2021. |
