CabiNett 2024, Fio Wines-Niepoort
Region: Duitsland
Producer: FIO Wines
This Riesling from Germany’s Mosel region hasn't exactly lost its way on The Portugal Collection website.Dirk Niepoort, Portugal’s iconic winemaker, has always had a tremendous passion for German Riesling. When he met Philipp Kettern—the ambitious, open-minded son of a winemaking family from the Mittelmosel—years ago, they hit it off immediately and decided to launch a joint project.
They named it 'Fio Wines'. 'Fio' is Portuguese for 'thread'—the thread connecting Portugal and Germany in this story.
Since we share Dirk’s passion for German Riesling, it was only natural for us to distribute these wines as well. This Riesling comes from an old vineyard planted in 1945, immediately after the war. With the local winemakers left with nothing, the municipality of Piesport decided to clear a forest at an altitude of 350 meters and allocate a small plot to each of the village's winemakers. The site is known as Piesporter Freudenberg. The vineyards have a southern exposure but benefit from a cool environment due to their altitude. This results in a late harvest—taking place in mid-October—much like the traditional practice in the Mosel region. A long growing season provides the ideal foundation for producing wines with great complexity.
The soil at Freudenberg consists of yellow slate.

| Vinification | Half of the juice ferments in stainless steel tanks, while the other half ferments in old wooden barrels; once the desired alcohol level is reached, the wine is cooled for a week to halt fermentation. Thanks to this long, gradual cooling process, only one-third of the usual amount of sulfite is required to stabilize the wine.

|
| Ripening | a few months on stainless steel and wood. |
