Indie Xisto 2019, Luis Seabra
Region: Douro
Producer: Luis Seabra
Why we chose this wine
Luis Seabra went to work with 2 old vineyards in the Cima Corgo, the heart of the Douro, and bottled his best grapes under the name 'CRU', a nod to French tradition but also and above all a reference to his method: Luis makes wine in its purest form with minimal intervention. Choosing vineyards and caring for the vines is the foundation. Then he lets nature do its work. He only adds a small amount of sulphite to, as he says, 'make the wines retain their precision' but there too he aims for the bare minimum.

“The 2019 Indie Xisto is a field blend (mostly Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Amarela) sourced from 70-year-old vines in a single vineyard in Alijo at 500 meters in altitude. It was aged for 18 months in used French 500-liter barrels and comes in at 13.7% alcohol. A strong contender for best of this tasting, this tightly wound Indie is powerful, precise and long on the finish. The fruit is under those tannins, though, and it has fine flavors waiting to come out. That will require another couple of years. It should then age very well, continuing to open and develop.”

Luis Seabra
When Luis Seabra told us in 2012 about his plans to make wine under his own name, we signed up straight away. We had known him for 10 years as a winemaker at Niepoort and knew we could not miss this.
