Antonio Madeira

Antonio Madeira grew up in Paris, but became completely hooked on the Dão during summer vacations with his grandparents. In 2010, he decided to look for old vineyards in the region and found refuge in the cellars at Alvaro Castro (Saes/Pellada) to make his first wines.

Antonio has since left Paris behind and lives with his family in the Dão where he has found his way through trial and error in recent years.
As partial outsider, he inevitably views the region through a different lens. Antonio became particularly passionate about very old plantings scattered in the Dão. Everyone agrees that the grapes there are of exceptional quality, but most local producers don't see the point anyway.
They are mostly put off by the small scale. The region is very fragmented anyway due to the jagged mountain landscape. You will hardly find plots with several hectares of surface area. Almost every family has a small plot with a few hundred vines. The grapes are sold to the cooperative or used for own consumption. It is among these mini-plants that the pearls are to be found.
But even if you are willing to add the disadvantages of fragmentation, you still have to find the owners willing to sell you their grapes. It often takes its time to gain their trust and you always remain subject to their goodwill.
